Grade 7 Lesson Plan: Skeletal System - Functions, Structure, Joints, Growth, Assessment, Resources, Plenary.
Grade 7 Lesson Plan: Skeletal System
Introduction:
- Begin the lesson by asking students if they have ever broken a bone or know someone who has. Discuss the importance of bones in our bodies and how they help us move, protect our organs, and provide structure.
- Show a short video clip or use visual aids to introduce the skeletal system and its functions.
Lesson Outline:
- Introduction to the Skeletal System
a. Discuss the main functions of the skeletal system (support, protection, movement, blood cell production, and mineral storage). b. Show a diagram of the human skeleton and label the major bones. c. Explain the difference between axial and appendicular skeletons.
- Structure of Bones
a. Discuss the composition of bones (calcium, phosphorus, collagen, etc.). b. Explain the structure of a long bone (diaphysis, epiphysis, periosteum, compact bone, spongy bone, bone marrow). c. Show a cross-section diagram of a bone and explain the different layers.
- Types of Joints
a. Introduce the different types of joints (hinge, ball-and-socket, pivot, gliding, saddle). b. Show examples of each type of joint and explain their range of motion.
- Bone Growth and Repair
a. Discuss how bones grow and develop during childhood and adolescence. b. Explain the process of bone remodeling and repair. c. Show a video or animation demonstrating bone growth and repair.
Questioning:
- Throughout the lesson, ask students questions to check their understanding and encourage participation. Some sample questions include:
- What are the main functions of the skeletal system?
- Can you name some major bones in the human body?
- What is the difference between axial and appendicular skeletons?
- How do different types of joints allow for different movements?
- How do bones grow and repair themselves?
Assessment:
- Distribute a worksheet to students to assess their understanding of the skeletal system. The worksheet can include labeling diagrams, matching bone names with their functions, and short answer questions.
- Alternatively, students can create a poster or presentation summarizing the key points of the lesson.
Differentiation:
- Provide additional resources or reading materials for students who want to explore the topic further.
- Offer support to students who may need extra assistance by providing simplified explanations or additional examples.
- For advanced students, encourage them to research and present on a specific bone or joint disorder.
Plenary:
- Review the main points of the lesson by asking students to share what they have learned about the skeletal system.
- Show a short video or use visual aids to reinforce the key concepts.
- Encourage students to ask any remaining questions or share any interesting facts they have discovered.
