- Define common nouns as words that refer to general people, places, things, or animals.
- Define proper nouns as words that refer to specific people, places, things, or animals and always begin with a capital letter.
- Provide examples and non-examples:
- Show examples of common nouns (e.g., dog, city, book) and proper nouns (e.g., Rover, London, Harry Potter).
- Show non-examples of common nouns (e.g., names of people, places, or things) and proper nouns (e.g., common nouns starting with a lowercase letter).
- Differentiated Activity 1: Common and Proper Noun Sort
- Provide a worksheet with a list of words and ask students to sort them into common and proper nouns.
- For struggling students, provide a word bank with the words already categorized.
- For advanced students, include some challenging words that may require research or critical thinking.
